The most recent contribution to commemorative efforts is the virtual reality project āIndependent Air Force Unit Osijekā. The project was devised within the public institution with expert assistance from members of the Unit and was implemented in collaboration with Culex Ltd of Osijek. It constitutes a unique virtual memorial created in honour of the Unitās personnel, who, by their fearless flights, demonstrated humanitarian intent and resisted a substantially superior aggressor force at the moment it was most needed.
The remarkable story of the Independent Air Force Unit Osijek begins in the autumn of 1991, when the Unitās founder, Colonel Marko ŽivkoviÄ, proposed the deployment of available aircraft at that time, which comprised sporting and agricultural aeroplanes, for defensive operations. Little time elapsed between the initial reconnaissance flights by powered hangāglider and aerial photography of enemy positions in early October, and the commencement of nocturnal humanitarian flights and combat operations. In an exceptionally short period, the Unitās personnel transformed agricultural cropāspraying aeroplanes into a squadron whose activities were twofold: on the one hand, they delivered humanitarian aid to the citizens of Vukovar in crates; on the other, they conducted combat operations against enemy positions using improvised explosive devices.
