The monument honours the twelve Croatian policemen who were killed on 2 May 1991 in the village of Borovo. It was erected in 2002 and it is located in the centre of the village. Until the monument was erected, a tribute to the fallen heroes was payed at the entrance of Borovo where 12 cypresses were planted, one for each killed policemen.
On the night of May 1-2, 1991, a police patrol intended to take down the Yugoslav and Chetnik flags at the entrance to the village of Borovo and replace them with the Croatian flag. While performing their duties, two police officers were wounded and two were taken prisoners by the Serbian rebels. The next day, a bus with Croatian police officers arrived to free two captured colleagues. They were ambushed by the Serbian rebels. During the ambush, 12 policemen were killed and more than 20 were wounded.
